Das dürfte einige Transhumanisten enttäuschen. Der Science Fiction Autor und Mathematiker Rudy Rucker ist der Meinung, dass es völlig überflüssig und noch dazu unmöglich ist, die Masse der Erde vollständig in Computorium umzuwandeln nur um damit wiederum eine virtuelle Version der Erde zu simulieren.

Matter, just as it is, carries out outlandishly complex chaotic quantum computations just by sitting around. Matter isn’t dumb. Every particle everywhere everywhen is computing at the maximum possible rate. [...]
This is because there are no shortcuts for nature’s computations. Due to a property of the natural world that I call the “principle of natural unpredictability,” fully simulating a bunch of particles for a certain period of time requires a system using about the same number of particles for about the same length of time. Naturally occurring systems don’t allow for drastic shortcuts.
Diese Idee, die unter anderem von Rudy Rucker in Postsingular und von Charles Stross in Accelerando beschrieben wird, basiert übrigens auf dem Konzept einer Dyson Sphäre, benannt nach einem Gedankenexperiment Freeman Dysons. Dabei wird eine 3m dicke Kugelstruktur aus Nanomaschinen um die Sonne erstellt, deren Radius der Entfernung zwischen Erde und Sonne entspricht. Die damit vollständig aufgefangene Strahlungsenergie der Sonne kann auf diese Weise dazu genutzt werden um beispielsweise die Simulation zu betreiben.
